Songwriting & Composition
Files currently being updated. Stay tuned for new Stuff soon!
We'll also be featuring information here about creativity in the near future.
For now, here are some books I highly recommend:
- A Whack on The Side of The Head, by Roger van Oech
- Originally published years ago to help corporate types develop their creativity. Now after multiple printings, the book has been expanded and updated with additional excercises to get you started "whacking."
- The Songwriter's Idea Book, by Sheila Davis
- Known for her wonderful book, The Craft of Lyric Writing, Davis presents a wealth of starting points and ideas, and ways to capture your muse when it hits (even when you're not aware of it).
- How to Make a Good Song a Hit Song, by Molly-Ann Leiken
- Published in 1990 by Billboard Books, you should be able to order the book from your local dealer if you can't find it on the shelves (ISBN 0-8230-7561-3). The book is written in a casual style, making for an easy read, and is filled with lots of tips on developing your inspiration and developing the most overlooked phase of all writing: REwriting.
Also, here's some great software written by songwriter Julia Swanson, of SwanSong Music. Starlight is a great organizer for any songwriter. Follow the link for the full description on her page.
Here are some MIDI composition programs for the PC I recommend.
