The Soapbox: Rants and Commentary:

Terrorism: It's OUR Fault?

I got the following as a submission to the Web Wall page. I had to respond.

+ "Lets talk about the real reason why terrorism happens: United States imperialism"

Let me see if I understand this. You're saying that because the US gets involved with the affairs of other nations when there are problems around the world, the country is imperialistic. And because of this, all the poor helpless nations of the world have no other alternative than to hijack our planes and kill 6000 innocent lives?

There are a couple of things wrong with this. Firstly, an imperialistic nation wishes to subjugate other countries and keep them under its control. The old Soviet Union is a good example. I don't see any of our troops invading other countries in an effort to make, say, Mexico into another state. If you have any examples of this, I'd love to hear them.

Secondly, terrorism is a fatal attack of fear upon usually-innocent citizens. When the Japanese suprise-attacked Pearl Harbor 60 years ago, they did it with their own men and weapons against a military target with people who expected to put their lives in jeopardy. Ask any of the few World Trade Center survivors if they ever thought that morning that a madman would murder their coworkers and friends as a political statement against American commerce.

No action done by this country put bombs and weapons in these cowards' hands and a fanatical devotion to our destruction in their heads. Nothing.

Waiting for a response. Your comments always welcome too.
