Masks

We spend so much time hiding
Who we really are,
Trying so hard to be
What we think others expect.
Guarding our words,
Our actions,
Our very thoughts.
Hiding behind a smile
When inside there are tears.
Cowering behind a facade
When all we really want
Is for someone to care enough
To look beneath the surface
And know us for ourselves.
But we've been hiding so long,
That we wonder sometimes
If there's anyone left inside to find,
And are we really hiding
From anyone but ourselves?
And even though
We feel safe behind our masks,
How can we ever feel loved
If we never let anyone know
Who we really are?
