Founders
of Skylands Writers Association, Inc.
Skylands Writers & Artists Association is a non-profit organization founded in 1994 by a group of Northwest NJ writers, and incorporated in 1995, by Daniela Gioseffi founder--born and educated in New Jersey. Daniela Gioseffi is an American Book Award winning author of 12 books of poetry and prose from major, university and alternative presses. She was a charter poet of the poets-in-residence in public schools movement and won two New York State Council for the Arts grant awards in poetry. She has taught widely as a professor of literature, communications and creative writing in colleges and universities throughout the Metropolitan area.
Her latest books are ON PREJUDICE: A Global Perspective [Doubleday/Anchor, NY.] ; Word Wounds & Water Flowers and Going On: Poems [Via Folios @ Purdue University, 1995-2000] In Bed with the Exotic Enemy; Stories & Novella [Avisson Press: Greensboro: NC, 1997] and Symbiosis: Poems [Rattapallax Press: NY, 2002.] WOMEN on WAR, The Feminist Press, NY 2003. She is the publisher/editor of this web site as well as Wise Women's Web (now PoetsUSA.com) nominated for BEST of the WEB, 1998.
Ed Smith is Assistant Editor, a poet whose most recent book is titled, I Am That Hero Ed Smith was born Newark on Dec. 23, 1952. He lives in the Jersey Shore community of Manasquan, NJ with his wife, Kathleen. He graduated from William Paterson College with a B.A. in Political Science, and Rutgers University with a M.L.S. in Library Science. Currently, he is the Library Director of Manville, NJ.
Edward Cifelli, current President, is the editor and biographer of famed NJ poet John Ciardi. Cifelli of Newton, NJ, is also a retired professor of English and literature at County College of Morris. Gretna Wilkinson of Madison, a Professor of Literature at County College of Morris ,served as second Vice President until 2000. SWAA, Inc.
is a public service organization, run by volunteer authors, now presided
over by Edward Cifelli. Its purpose is to encourage the enjoyment of
literary art and artistic community and literary commentary. New Jersey
has been home to some of the finest poets of our times, ie. Walt Whitman
in his Camden years; Stephen Crane born in Newark in 1891; Allen Ginsberg
resident of Paterson; William Carlos Williams of Rutherford; John Ciardi
of Metuchen; Amiri Baraka of Newark, Poet Laureate of NJ; Alicia Ostriker
of the Princeton area, Stephen Dunn, prize-winning poet of the Stockton
area; Pulitizer and National Book Award Winner, C.K. Williams born in
Newark; Robert Pinsky, former Poet Laureate of the USA, born in Long
Branch, Yusef Komunyakaa, teaching in Princeton; Gerald Stern, NJ's
Former Poet Laureate, living in Clinton. Currently SWAA is inactive
in 2003 and 2004 except for production of this site. |
