How to Answer Questions “Out of the Book”:

  1. Did you read the instructions?

  1. Did you read the instructions?  Sometimes the instructions on the assignment (or the instructions given in class) will tell you where to look in the book to find the answer to the questions.

  1. Did you read the entire question?  What is the topic of the question?

  1. Once you have read the question, and you think you know what the topic is, start to look in the book for the answer.

DO THIS:

*    Scan the sections first.

*    Read the titles, headings, and subheadings in the chapter to find a section that seems to be related to the topic of the question.

*    Look for bold print or words in italics to find a section that seems to be related to the topic in the question.

  1. Once you find a section that seems to have the answer to the question … READ THE ENTIRE SECTION … not just the sentences that you think contain the answer!!!  Usually, there is more information to help you understand the topic in the sections before and after the answer!!!

STUCK????? … Still can’t find the answer????

               Try This:

·        Look in the sections that are before and after the part of the book that you thought had the answer to the question.  Sometimes, when the answer is not in the section that seems to have the answer, the answer to the question may be in a section that is near-by.

·        Check the index in the back of the book (Remember, research names in the index using the LAST NAME of the person you are looking for).

·        Ask a friend (ASK for help … don’t ask to copy their work!!).

·        Ask Mr. Van Orden.
